KENNY ROGERS

He has also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Entertainment Buyers Association, is a recipient of the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music, and was honoured with the prestigious Horatio Alger Award in 1990 as one who had distinguished themselves despite humble beginnings.

Against all odds, Kenny has charted a record in each of the last 7 decades (50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s, 2010’s). He has recorded 24 No. 1 songs and 12 No. 1 albums, including his Greatest Hits album, which has sold over 24 million copies worldwide.  Kenny is featured in the Top Ten list of Best Selling Male Artists of All Time, with 1 Diamond, 19 Platinum and 31 Gold albums and has worldwide album sales of more than 120 million. The first country artist to consistently sell out arenas, he has played to millions of fans around the world.

His latest album, The Love Of God, which became his 21st Top 10 Country album, was a spiritual awakening for the legendary singer who first sang Amazing Grace in the church choir. 12 inspirational songs feature Kenny’s serene vocals accompanied by special guests on new arrangements with sweeping strings and soaring harmonies.  Never one to rest on his laurels, Rogers recently completed his autobiography (scheduled for a Fall release) and will begin recording a new album the Summer of this year.

GLEN CAMPBELL

Glen was one of the most visible international Country stars when he hosted his own network television show for 3 years.  The Goodtime Hour featured many of the top musical guests of the time including Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Neil Diamond.   It attracted weekly global audiences of 50 million.

He has 9 Grammy Awards including this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award and won 4 in 1967 alone – the first artist to win the Country and Pop categories in the same year – for Gentle on My Mind and By The Time I Get To Phoenix, which along with the Most Played Song of the Millenium, Wichita Lineman, was enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame.  Rhinestone Cowboy is an Academy of Country Music Song of the Year.

Glen was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.  He has received Country Music Association Entertainer & Male Vocalist of the Year awards, multiple Academy of Country Music trophies including the prestigious Pioneer Award and a Gospel Music Association Dove Award.

He starred alongside John Wayne in the classic film True Grit, published Rhinestone Cowboy: An Autobiography and was named one of CMT’s 40 Greatest Men in Country Music History.

As a young session guitarist in the 60’s with the elite Los Angeles Wrecking Crew, Glen contributed to the hits of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Merle Haggard, Nat King Cole, Ricky Nelson, The Righteous Brothers & The Beach Boys.  When Brian Wilson famously chose to stop touring, Glen served as his replacement on the road.

Glen’s final album, Ghost on the Canvas, is a soundtrack to his colourful 76 years and was released to critical acclaim.   It features a celebratory jam with the guitar virtuoso and friends.

A public disclosure was made last year that Glen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and so far, this has not affected his performances.

Erykah Badu tears the roof off the Sydney Opera House

There’s a reason Erykah Badu has been labelled the Queen of Soul. It’s in every move she makes as she confidently controls her stage. It’s there every time she opens her mouth, whether she is merely addressing her audience or melting even the hardest hearts with her sweet yet powerful vocals. Yes, Erykah Badu is the true definition of a Queen.

After keeping the audience waiting for an hour, she finally sauntered on stage to affect a delicious insouciance, peering through a pair of school-marm spectacles as if to say: “Who are you applauding — what, me?” She might have come across tough and a little intimidating, but the wry smile she is trying her hardest to suppress keeps giving her away.

With her short hair knotted into twin buns, Badu projects an eccentric brand of cool. Her look — hip-hop gold chains over a black top and multicoloured Picasso pants — seems androgynous until she swivels to reveal a plunging, back-exposing effect at the rear. These occasional glimpses of flesh carry an undeniably erotic charge, but in a delectably artful rather than crass MTV style — an effect heightened by her feline slinkiness.

Backing her was a well-schooled four-piece (drums, keyboards, bass and DJ) plus four back-up singers who proved equally adept at dirty funk in the spirit of 1970s acts such as Funkadelic and the Ohio Players to stripped-back soul with a minimalist aesthetic (Badu’s use of an electronic percussion pad reinforcing the influence of hip-hop’s 80s heyday).

Appletree copped a surprise re-working. Starting with a solo from Badu on her drum machine before giving the lyrics a jazzy ‘scat-style’ remix, it’s enough to spark a bums-off-seats rebellion that will last the rest of the night. The set flawlessly bounces on as the Opera House is treated to a beautifully soulful version of Love of My Life, a joint that usually features Chi-town emcee Common. Before the end of the set proper, stomping renditions of I Want You and Danger will also be added to the nights highlight reel. At the conclusion of Danger, Erykah waves a short goodbye and leaves the stage for the first time.

Erykah’s stage manager informs the crowd that if we want to see her again she is going to have to hear us. “Badu…Badu…Badu” is the response from the crowd, and a short moment later she is back centre stage. She instructs the audience to help her out with the “Yes-sir-ee” parts of the next song, before making Soldier, the first cab off the encore rank. She interrupts the track mid-way through to make a political statement, granting solid insight into the frame of mind she was in when writing Soldier and the album it belongs to.

The farewell track for the night is Bag Lady, performed while the lady of the night graciously jumps down to greet the first few rows of the audience. Erykah Badu truly tore the roof off the Opera House tonight.

24 year old DJ Skrillex is one amazingly talented electronic music producer, having won 3 Grammys and being nominated for many more, he has helped put the dubstep genre on the map by slowly venturing into the mainstream music scene.

The Empty Cup Announced as Supporting Act at Sade

The Empty Cup have been announced as the supporting act for Sade – an Evening on the Green on Tuesday December 6.

The Empty Cup is a producer and emcee headed by vocalist Brian Kruger. Having performed with The Typhoons, supporting acts such as Lyrics Born and The Streets, and at festivals such as Parklife and Good Vibrations, he is a veteran of the Perth scene.

2010 brought the emergence of The Empty Cup as a solo entity, and over the past year, Brian has hosted the popular co-lab jam band night and other freestyle hip-hop events and collaborated with established artists from all ends of the local music spectrum.

The four piece produces a raw live feel of new-wave hip-hop while simultaneously drawing colour from classical, soul and rock influences. The Empty Cup’s Brian Kruger is an aficionado of free-form freestyling. This, set to a backdrop of vocal harmonies paired with a diversely influenced and genuinely expressive rhythm section makes for a vibrant array of melodically kaleidoscopic wholesomeness.

The Empty Cup will be playing at an Evening on the Green from 6:30pm.

Rocking new venue for Erykah Badu, Fat Freddy’s Drop & Mayer Hawthorne

Due to unforeseen circumstances the Perth show  for Erykah Badu, Fat Freddy’s Drop & Mayer Hawthorne on Saturday, Feb 25 has had to change venues. In looking for a new venue, we’ve taken on board the calls for a venue with a bigger dance area, and come to the decision that Belvoir Amphitheatre provides the perfect balance between dancing space at the front and seating on the steps. Anyone who was at last week’s Portishead show would no doubt agree!

Now with Mayer Hawthorn joining the bill in what has become a massive triple headline event – three major internationals will join forces for what already has to be one of the must-see shows of 2012!

Mayer Hawthorne joins Erykah Badu & Fat Freddy’s Drop

How Do You Do? asks Mayer Hawthorne on his brand new album and in February 2012, he returns with his band The County to Australia to find out! No stranger to Australian shores, he’s been a mainstay since January 2010, spreading the sunshine vibes of LA whilst maintaining the spirit of his hometown Detroit (arguably the birthplace of Soul Music) and this February How Do You Do? comes Down Under to make for some very special arrangements.

Mayer Hawthorne, the crooner from Stones Throw records, has just made the jump to Universal Music for his second album entitled ‘How Do You Do?’ His debut LP ‘A Strange Arrangement’ lit a fire across the world for its faithful interpretation of classic genres like Soul, Blues, Country, Doo-Wop and Rock n Roll. Earlier in 2011 he released a free EP of covers including works originally by Chromeo (who have also remixed current single ‘A Long Time’), Isley Brothers, ELO and more.

Immediately familiar but with a fresh twist, Mayer Hawthorne and his gorgeous band The County light it up across Australia including joining Erykah Badu and Fat Freddy’s Drop in what is easily Summer’s greatest triple bill over in Perth!

And for the diehard fans, Jessie J is bringing us more treats, with her exclusively re-issuing her debut album ‘Who You Are’ to include bonus tracks, live footage of her London performance, as well as lots of videos and personal photos that are sure to tie you over for the next few months until you can see her live!
