GRAMMY® award winning artist Erykah Badu is touching down in Australia this summer
in what is sure to be the hottest ticket of the season.
Forging her own path in soul music and almost single-handedly directing the genre since the ’97 debut Baduizm, Badu’s releases have always demanded critics attention, whilst her live shows incite rapturous engagement from audiences as she bursts through hits like On & On, Love Of My Life, Apple Tree, Tyrone, Bag Lady, Window Seat and more.
Her latest release New Amerykah Part II (Return Of The Ankh) further pushed the boundaries of contemporary soul music, enlisting the work of previous collaborators James Poyser and Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson (The Roots, Al Green) as well as cutting edge producers like Madlib, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Karriem Riggins (Diana Krall) and the late J Dilla.
Erykah Badu will perform live for the very first time in her own headline shows in Australia, offering fans their first taste to see her in concert in exquisite and historic venues such as Sydney Opera House, Melbourne’s Palais Theatre and Perth’s picturesque Belvoir Theatre.
Fat Freddy’s Drop
The enigmatic seven piece soul act have won the world over with their hypnotic live performances which translate their impeccable records to a live setting in a similarly dynamic fashion to Badu’s razor sharp band.
Their last album ‘Live At Roundhouse London’ showcased the incredible live show, which takes in highlights from their albums ‘Based On A True Story’ and ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big BW’.
Mayer Hawthorne
With his live band The County, Mayer Hawthorne ignites stages with a cracking live show that has already swept Australian audiences off their feet twice including sold out performances at Prince of Wales, Manning Bar, The Basement and festivals like Playground Weekender and Days Like This.
Recently performing his new single The Walk live in the last month on Late Night ‘s Conan and Letterman shows, Mayer Hawthorne & The County are confirming what the underground has known for years; this singer-producer can channel the best of soul, funk, disco and yacht rock in to an inimitable 2012 blend. How Do You Do? is a far greater amalgamation of his influences (like Brian Wilson, Michael Macdonald and Marvin Gaye) than found on his popular debut A Strange Arrangement, which was released in 2009 on Stones Throw Records and spawned the incredibly popular heart shaped vinyl single Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out.
New venue
In further news, due to unforeseen circumstances the Perth show on Saturday, Feb 25 has had to change venues. In looking for a new venue, we’ve taken on board the calls for a venue with a bigger dance area, and come to the decision that Belvoir Amphitheatre provides the perfect balance between dancing space at the front and seating on the steps.
Now with Mayer Hawthorn joining the bill in what has become a massive triple headline event – three major internationals will join forces for what already has to be one of the must-see shows of 2012!
